Summit to sea lines in the Lyngen Alps and Finnmark

Arctic Norway with its fjords it’s pretty spectacular by itself. Combine it with sailing and ski touring and you have a recipe for the ultimate Nordic adventure.

The Lyngen Alps offer an endless playground, and our boat provides access to its secluded mountains. “Sail to Ski” has gained popularity in the last few years, and we have turned our focus beyond Lyngen. We now sail to places like Reinfjord, Jokelfjord, or Frakfjord in Finnmark to find both great and secluded lines. It is quite common for us to be the only group on the mountain.

You will get to your line during the evening sail, skin up to the summit in the morning, ski down with views of the surrounding peaks and ocean, and finish up with eating local meal on the boat. Not to mention the Northern lights, fishing, saunas, or freezing water dips that you can enjoy.

Why Ski and Sail with us?

Trip beyond main Lyngen area

Ski and Sail has become popular in the last few years, which pushed us to find a new playground in Finnmark. It’s quite common for us to be the only group on the mountain, and we explore extensively to keep it that way. See the ITINERARY below for details.

Itinerary

DAY 1 _ Flight to Tromsø | Getting on Board | Sailing

We get on board in the afternoon and sail through the fjord to our first skiing and snowboarding destination.

DAY 2 _ Arnøya or other islands| Evening: Sauna on the island

Ski tour on one of the islands on the way to Finnmark

DAY 3 _ Jokelfjord

First stop in Finnmark, tackling one of the remote peaks. We are likely to have the mountain for ourselves.

DAY 4 _ Reinfjord

Another secluded fjord with majestic peaks. Offering one of the best views of the whole area. If weather allows we can ski down the valley and be picked up on a different location to save sailing time.

DAY 5 _ Frakkfjorden

If weather allows and group is up for it, we can push it further north and explore peaks around Frakkfjorden. Clever link ups to save sailing time are possible. We can also cruise to closer location if long sailing times is not what you are up for.

DAY 6 _ Kågen

Cool traverse of the island with some amazing lines on the way will leave us in a good spot for last push towards Tromsø

DAY 7 _ Vannøya, Ringvassøya or others islands

Finishing strong on one of our favorite peaks in Northern Troms.

DAY 8 _ Flight back home

After breakfast and check out, you can go straight to the airport or do some sightseeing in Tromsø. Usually guests fly out anytime during Saturday, but you can also leave as early as 7 p.m. on Friday.

Typical day

We’ll ski in the morning, have a late lunch on the boat, and sail to our new destination throughout the afternoon and evening. We typically have dinner at a new spot.

We enjoy local saunas and jacuzzis in various ports or fishing villages.

Arrival and Departure times

We board on Saturday evening and disembark the following Saturday morning. Please arrive on Saturday no later than 3 p.m. You can depart as early as 7 p.m. on Friday. If your flight connections don’t work out and you need to stay an extra night, we can arrange an additional day (or two) of guiding. For extra nights, check out the Viking Hotel in Tromsø.

Return flights from Tromsø are via Oslo.

Extra guiding

Talk to us if you want to organize extra guiding day prior or after the trip.

Accommodation

Our boat

We hire the boat from a local charter company with a long history and skippers with good knowledge of the area. It is a comfortable 47-foot or 50-foot long yacht with 5 cabins and 3-4 bathrooms + showers with a common area and kitchen. There are both twin rooms (with bunk beds) and double rooms.

Lyngen fjords are calm waters so seasickness is generally not an issue on our trips. In 5 years doing the trips, there were only a handful of clients with mild and short sea sickness.

Details

Terrain

Lyngen Alps is the place to go freeriding if you are looking for powder in Scandinavia. It is tucked into the mainland so the snow is drier than in other areas. Our mission will be to ski a variety of backcountry terrain – powdery open lines, ocean runs, classic lines in the area, and couloirs (if conditions allow).

Vertical Meters

On this trip, we will sail to ski secluded places only accessed by ski touring or splitboarding. Expect around 1000 – 1200 vert. m daily within 6 days.

Who is it for?

You should have previous ski touring or splitboarding experience (at least 3 tours). You should be able to cover at least 1000 vert. m. daily for 3 days straight. 1 day off is definitely a possibility, more than that would likely hinder your experience.

Group size

We will be a maximum of 7 guests guided by a certified guide and professional skipper. There will be 2 groups (if the number of clients allows) so you can choose between a faster and a slower one.

Thinking about the trip, but not ready to commit?

Leave us your email, and we will let you know when the trip is about to be sold out.

    Expert skiers and riders

Our classic Ski and Sail trip is a mostly open sea to summit lines with some tree-skiing. For expert skiers only we put together an alternative around the most iconic steep lines and couloirs in Lyngen. To name a few, there is Forhorlttinden, nicknamed “The Godmother of all couloirs”. Sofiatinden or Trolvastinden. Crossing the Lyngen peninsula with an amazing downhill around Storgalten is also possible.

Those lines are around 40 to 45 degrees. Safety is the priority for us. If the conditions are not right, our UIAGM guide has more conservative option for each day.
